Operating a Forklift in BC – Dispelling the Myths

Clarifying common misconceptions around forklift operation and forklift licensing in BC

Myth – You need a license to drive a forklift in BC

One of the most common myths around forklift and lift truck operation is that a driver’s license, or ‘forklift license’ is required. The reality, however, is that there is no specific forklift license in BC. Instead, the legal requirement for forklift operators is to receive proper training and certification for all equipment they may be utilizing on a job site.

A driver’s license is only required when operating a forklift on a public road. This is a rare occurrence, but certain situations may require it such as traveling between job sites, or transporting goods or equipment that are stored off-site.

In order to drive a forklift on a standard job site, an operator requires forklift certification for the specific class of lift they are using, such as a Class 1, 2, 4, or 5.

Myth - Only operators working on construction sites need to be licensed or certified

Many people believe they only require certification if they are working on a construction site, or similarly hazardous location. This belief could not be further from the truth. While the type of training  and certification will change based on the type of environment, and type of equipment you are utilizing, all forklift operators in BC require certification.

To better understand the requirements and types of certification you may require, it is crucial to talk to an expert. At Rob’s Forklift, we’re happy to help guide you in the right direction, and get you set up with the training and certification you need.

Myth – Forklifts are easy to operate

The reality is that forklifts are complex machines that require specialized training to operate. As with any type of heavy machinery, there are inherent risks and challenges that come with operating them. Forklift operators are required to have a constant awareness of their surroundings, and the potential hazards they may encounter on the job site.

It’s also important to remember that there are many different types of lifts that can be encountered on the job, and each has their own requirements for training and certification. To learn more about how the different types of lifts and how we can help you get certified, please see some of our training options.

Myth – Forklift training is costly and requires candidates to be sent off-site to a training facility
