Why do I need to be certified?
This is one of the main questions workers ask about forklift and lift truck operation. Many new and eager workers feel like they could operate a forklift without too much difficulty. They’d argue that they’ve watched coworkers use the machines numerous times, and it looks straightforward enough. Some have even received uncertified or unofficial training from a supervisor or another colleague. Unfortunately, most assume that’s enough for them to take on the challenge.
So, why do they need to obtain certification? Firstly, it is a strict requirement of CCOHS. Secondly, it helps ensure all operators are trained to the highest standards of safety and efficiency. And finally, it provides the organization with security and confidence in their teams.
Operators without proper forklift certification won’t know how to handle an environment that can change rapidly. They won’t know how to perform a pre operation inspection to ensure the lift is free from damage or defect. They won’t understand that they are responsible for any damage caused while they are in control. Simply put, operators without proper certification are not prepared for the job. As a result, they pose a significant risk to the safety and functionality of any job site.
Forklift certification is essential. It grants operators the knowledge and tools they need to be safe and successful at work. It also helps to build a strong foundation of good habits that operators can carry with them throughout their careers.
If safety alone isn’t enough to convince you, then perhaps understanding the financial impact of being found non-compliant with CCOHS regulations will help. In 2024, financial penalties for forklift-related violations in Canada totaled more than $8 million dollars. This does not include possible legal issues or lawsuits. Employers could face additional consequences if they are found non-compliant. They may also be liable if they put their employees, or the public, at risk.
Alongside these financial repercussions, many organizations are also forced to jump through more regulatory hoops after being found non-compliant. They also risk opening themselves up to greater scrutiny and increased audits – which can cause severe delays in productivity for any organization.
I’ve already been certified, why do I need to go through it again?
Most experienced forklift operators know the importance of going through regular training and certification. Some, however, may still question the necessity of recertification.
Whenever we get this question, we direct people to two major benefits:
- Recertification provides an incredibly valuable refresher on all the core elements of operating a forklift efficiently and safely
- Recertification helps operators break any bad habits that may have formed since their last certification
Repetition is incredibly important for retaining information. The more times you go through something, the better equipped you are to remember and utilize what you’ve learned. This is especially crucial for training on the safe and efficient use of a tool like a forklift.
Let’s face it, we form bad habits when we get too relaxed and start ignoring our training. If you have worked long enough, some tasks may feel routine. You might stop thinking about them. This can be incredibly dangerous, especially when you operate heavy machinery.
Recertification helps to break those bad habits by getting back to the fundamentals. People often overlook simple but essential tasks, like a pre-operation inspection. Putting a focus on this with recertification helps emphasize their importance. It also helps re-form habits that people may have lost over time.
Many job sites also undergo major changes over time, so the training received years ago may not always apply in the same way now. Some operators may have changed jobs and now work in a different environment or industry. So, updating their knowledge and skills is necessary in these situations.
If these benefits still don’t have you convinced, then just remember that recertification is a requirement from CCOHS. To remain compliant with all regulations, operators need to complete their recertification every three years.
What does certification actually provide?
Another question that often arises when workers have doubts about the efficacy of forklift certification. Official training and certification provides the skills and knowledge workers need to operate forklifts and lift trucks safely and effectively. It also grants peace of mind to an organization that they are in compliance, and in good hands.
Some training and certification teaches only the theory relating to forklift operation. The best training and certification you can receive is a mix of practical training alongside the theory. You will find it most effective when the training caters to the tools your team will use at the locations they’ll use them.
